“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb
I love this proverb.
Because growing a business is a lot like planting a tree.
You may hear about these businesses that start and instantly make the founder millions. Or the ad campaign that draws thousands of new customers at once.
Sure, these things happen occasionally. But they’re rare.
And every single time I see one of these, I try and do a little bit of research.
And without fail, the founder or marketer has been in the industry for years. They’ve written thousands of ads. They’ve hired and fired people. They’ve tweaked their product. They spend years of late nights getting things to happen.
But you know who I never hear about in these stories?
People who drag their feet. People who refuse to commit.
We often send out marketing proposals and get a “let me think about it”.
I totally get that.
But many of these companies will never commit. And they’ll remain stagnant for a long time.
It makes me very sad. I check in with them at a future date, and they’ve grown by maybe 5%. The owners are still stressed about future work and income.
If you’re not doing marketing, it’s time to start. Learn it yourself. Work with us. Hire someone else. I don’t care.
But unless you put the seed in the ground, it will never grow.
Marketing is putting out seeds. Sometimes those seeds take a long time to grow. Sometimes they spring right up.
But if you’re not planing seeds now, you’ll have no harvest later.
Marketing is planting.
So it’s time to get going.
