Headline Hack: Comparison
We’ve talked before about status. For most goods and services, status can be one of the most powerful tools in your marketing arsenal.
But how do you use status in your marketing?
The Subtle Way
A lot of “luxury” brands have spent a ton of time and money building up their status. With something like a Gucci handbag or Lamborghini sports car, they only need to show a photo of it for most of their audience to know that it has good status.
The Association Way
By showing your product with other products of status, you can begin to create an association in your client’s minds. If something else is a status item and they begin to associate that with your product, your product will naturally gain status as well.
The Hack: The “What Will People Think” Way
If we have a new brand we’re working with on ads and sales copy, one of our favorite tools is to use a “What would your friends think” headline. Here are a few examples:
- “Imagine when your friends taste the best steak they’ve ever had”
- “Wait until you hit the beach and everyone sees your perfectly toned figure”
- “What will they say when you pull up in your brand new Porsche?”
The announcers used to use this tactic all the time on The Price is Right. Why? Because it works. It makes you imagine people viewing you in whatever product or service is listed.
And that makes you want it.
