Amazon is Doing it. Why Aren’t You?
Here’s a fun project for you: Open up a new tab in your browser. Type in “Top Google Advertisers in 2016”. Or you can pick 2017. Or 2011.
In fact, if you pick virtually any year in the past two decades or so, you’ll find that Amazon was one of the top Google spenders. Most years they are the single largest purchaser of Google AdWords – often by tens of millions of dollars.
Think about it: The single largest e-commerce giant of all time got that way through advertising.
And it wasn’t traditional advertising. Amazon doesn’t do a lot of TV and radio.
But they do pay-per-click advertising. And through that (and a few other channels), they were able to grow to one of the largest companies on the planet.
And they are still spending on Google ads.
In fact, some conservative estimates put Amazon spending at $10.9 million per month on Google AdWords alone. And it’s likely much higher than that. That’s north of $130 million a year.
I know many smaller companies that spend about $1 million a month on advertising.
Now, am I saying you should spend $130 million on Google AdWords per year? No. Of course not.
But I am suggesting that spending money on ads, content, videos, design, and marketing is an investment for your business.
That if you want to grow, marketing is a must.
Of course, you have to have a great product. You have to innovate. You have to deliver.
But without advertising, no one will know you. And you can’t grow if no one knows who you are.
So take some of that money and put it back in the business. It will pay off in the long run.
