Patience and Speed
The other day I heard Gary Vaynerchuk talk about patience and speed.
In fact, here is the exact phrase:
Macro Patience and Micro Speed
When it comes to marketing, this is brilliant.
It simply means this: On the small things, move as fast as you can. But be patient. The good stuff takes time to build.
But most small businesses get this exactly backwards.
They are impatient in the things that matter, but move really slow on the things that do matter.
Let me give you an example:
We’ll often build landing pages for clients as part of our marketing plan.
Often due to client pushback, we’ll spend weeks or months on a single page. They want to change the colors. They want the logo updated. They want to change the copy.
Then we’ll finally get it launched. And they’re calling me within three days wondering where the traffic is.
They expect instant results, but take months to get anything live.
This is completely backwards.
Imagine if an apple grower spent months picking out the exact right seed, the right place to plant it in the orchard, waited for the perfect temperature, and spent days putting fences all around the location to protect the seed.
Then imagine he planted the seed and came back the next day and asked, “Where’s the tree?!?”
That type of thinking is insane, yet it’s prevalent in the business world.
Don’t get me wrong. Having good content is important. Preparation is important. Good copy is important. Excellence is always the goal.
But don’t let the pursuit of perfection keep you from moving forward. Like farming, building a brand takes time and effort. The longer it takes you to put the seed in the ground, the longer it will take you to get the fruit.
Perfection is the enemy of progress.
So get out there an plant some seeds.
Macro Patience and Micro Speed
